A Jovian planet, also called a gas giant or giant planet, is a large planet that is not composed of rocks and other solid matter. There are four Jovian planets within our solar system: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Many extrasolar Jovians have been identified orbiting other stars. "Jovian" comes from the Latin word Jovis, meaning "of Jove," with Jove being an ancient Roman father god which later became identified with the god Jupiter.
