Weather Terms & Types

Precipitation:

  • Liquid - rain, drizzle, freezing rain, freezing drizzle.
  • Liquid & solid - mix, sleet.
  • Solid - snow, snow grains, snow pellets, hail, ice pellets.

Sunny - very little to no clouds.

Hot - heavy and high tempuratures from the sun.

Cold - low tempuratures from the sun.

Cloudy - little to many clouds.

Dry - low humidity in the atmosphere.

Wet - high humidity in the atmosphere.

Windy - movement in air in the atmosphere.

 

Hurricane and Typhoon (taifun) are regional terms for a strong "tropical cyclone." Typhoons form in the northwest Pacific Ocean (west of the dateline), and may occur at any time of the year, but tend to form between May and November. Names for tropical cyclones include hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical derpression, and cyclone.

 

Tsunami or tidal wave is a series of water waves (called a tsunami wave train) caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, such as an ocean or large lake. Tsunami can devastate coastal regions; casualties may be high due to waves moving faster than humans and animals can run.
